The Connection With Nature Course was a four-week course from 3rd April to 24th April, every Thursday from 11.00 am - 2.00 pm in the Recovery College Room, DCU School of Nursing. Paula and Tracey co-facilitated this course. Paula came up with the idea for the course, and it came to fruition with the support of the Recovery College and the co-facilitation with Tracey. The purpose of the course was to create a safe group for people with an interest in walking, talking, who also enjoyed having a coffee/tea whilst bringing recovery outdoors.
The group was fantastic and had great fun on the course. They would meet up in the Recovery College room and first have a cuppa, which set them up for the walk. There was a lot of chatting and laughter, which was brilliant. Albert College Park became one of the favourite places for the group to visit, and they also visited the Botanic Gardens. Then, after the walk, some participants went home, to work, or back to the Recovery College for more refreshments and chats. The facilitators believe that walking in nature, especially with friends, is immensely good for us, but has an even greater potential for people in recovery who often live alone.
As the facilitators, being a part of the Connection With Nature group, they saw first-hand the positive impact it had on the participants as well as themselves. On the days out, the group was able to slow down, chat and notice the nature that is all around us. Before the days out and on the rainy day the group were able to experience some nature-inspired "rainy day" activities provided by the lovely Paula. On the first day the participants painted stones with little positive notes and left them in the park. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy this part of the course. It allowed for creativity, self-expression, informal chats, and brought a sense of mindfulness, ease, and belonging to the group. The combination of nature, creativity, and community created a space where everyone could relax, unwind, share, and support one another. The facilitators feel it would be a privilege to be part of this course if it ran again. We hope all the participants enjoyed the course as much as we did!
