Being a Trauma informed Community – Ballymun

Trauma informed Ballymun is a group of stakeholders from across the Ballymun area that have been proactively working to raise awareness of how to Ballymun can become a Trauma informed Community. The Recovery College are delivering two 2 day workshops with workers and community members around understanding trauma and how it may present. The objective of the workshops is to raise self awareness by understanding how Trauma may impact us on an individual level but also how to engage and interact with people who may have experienced Trauma in the past or are currently experiencing Trauma in their lives.

Dual Diagnosis Skills Enhancement Workshops

The Recovery College will be delivering a further two one day workshops in May which will be co-facilitated by members of the community who have lived and/or professional experience with dual diagnosis.

This one day workshop will build on the Dual Diagnosis Awareness workshops rolled out in the NEIC community in 2019. It is a step above ‘awareness’ and will look to enhance the skills of people with, family members of, and organisations working with people who may have substance use and mental health difficulties along with other complex needs. The workshop will be trauma informed, acknowledging the place of individual and community trauma as an important factor in people developing substance use and mental health issues. In the interactive workshop we will work with participants present understanding of Dual Diagnosis and existing interpersonal, relationship, clinical and community engagement skills. We will use real case studies and community scenarios to enhance how people can and already do work with people who have both mental health and substance use difficulties. The plan is that participants will feel more confident to respond to dual diagnosis at an individual level and through interagency networking.

The workshop will be broken up into two half day sessions one week apart, hopefully this will make it easier for some people with work or childcare commitments.
Workshop 1 will be held on 22nd and 29th May at St Laurence O’Toole Recreation Centre, Sheriff Street Lower, Dublin, D01 PD89
Workshop 2 will be held on 23rd/30th May at Killarney Court Community Centre, Buckingham St, Dublin 1
Both Sessions will start at 10am and finish at 1pm

Becoming a Trauma Informed Community workshop – NEIC

Health policy now acknowledges the place and impact of unresolved trauma on the health and well being of people and communities and calls for care provision to be trauma informed. Research carried out in 2019 recommended that service provision for Dual Diagnosis need to be trauma informed. Mental health and substance use issues are often related to past trauma and unresolved trauma in peoples lives and their families. The impact and potential for healing goes beyond the individual and family and is often tied up with community and health care provider experiences. If a community and services recognise the impact of trauma on use of substances and mental health issues and their role in reducing this impact, the possibilities of recovery become more realistic.

The two day workshop is open to anybody living or working in the North East Inner City. The workshop will explore the meaning of normal responses to adverse circumstances in life and implications of unresolved trauma responses in our lives. We will examine how abnormal trauma responses by self services and communities can affect our ability to recover. With an open exploration of people and communities lived experience of trauma, we will explore how a community can be trauma informed and how agencies and services can apply trauma informed principles in care provision.

Living or Working in the North Inner City?

After such a great turnout at out last meeting we would like you to join us again on the 28th of February to further our discussion regarding a community response to Dual Diagnosis. This meeting will be held at St Agatha’s Hall on Dunne Street in Dublin 1.

Mental health and substance use issues can be heavy topics to discuss so we plan to start the morning off with a wellbeing session. We will have local Sports and Wellbeing Co-Ordinator Michael Darragh MacAuley facilitate a gentle Yoga session. We would love to see as many of you avail of this session but it is of course optional. You are more than welcome to just join us for the discussion and some food afterwards.
So far we have covered the challenges and barriers that are faced when an individual or family look for support. To move things forward, the next topic up for discussion will be what an appropriate care pathway should look like for individuals and family members experiencing the affects of mental health and substance use. How can we offer a more holistic approach by using the services that already exist within the community?
